Frieze Carpeting: Shag Remixed?

Posted by: Renita Davis | Comments (0)

Frieze CarpetingCan a remix ever be better than the original? It doesn’t often happen that way in music, but when it comes to carpeting, frieze carpet has definite advantages over its older cousin, shag.

Shag was the rage in the 1960s and 1970s. No modern home was considered complete without it. The plush carpet feels nice on bare feet, but it takes a lot of care. The long strands, which are twisted loosely and spaced less tightly than most carpets, lie in different directions when walked on. For that reason, homes were also incomplete without a “carpet rake.” Many a child had to rake the carpet as a regular chore.

Fast forward a few decades, and meet frieze, most commonly pronounced “free-say.” The informal, laid-back look and the plush Read More→

ak_wood14bWood countertops bring warmth to any kitchen. A luxurious choice for countertops, the variety of colors and finishes of wood is limitless. Wood countertops provide a beautifully finished kitchen both complementing and completing the overall look and texture of the room. Your new wood countertops will complement your wood cabinets whether stained or painted. The high-end luxury look of wood is typically very reasonably priced and although it is more than laminate countertops, wood is typically not as expensive as granite.

Looking for a sustainable countertop? Reclaimed wood is a great choice. It complies with LEED standards and is the most eco-friendly of countertops. Wood is one of the more sanitary products for the kitchen, with inherent properties to protect it from bacteria build-up.

Wood countertops do require some maintenance, including regular mineral oil treatments. And because wood oxidizes over time, your wood countertops may change color as they age. Repair of wood countertops is generally easy and when they need updating or refreshing, most only require a bit of sanding with a 220 fine-grit sandpaper and re-oiling.

Advantages of Wood

  • Natural with many eco-friendly options
  • Easy to clean
  • Provides a smooth, even surface
  • Warm appearance and renewable surface
  • Sanitary with inherent anti-bacterial properties Read More→
